I'm Brazilian, I've always loved music and since I was little I buy and I listen to rock.
During the 70's I met a magazine called Pop, which I christened German Pop, since it was of Germanic origin, I did not understand what was written in the great majority, but it was there that I met the groups that I publish here on the blog today. Rock made in Germany is one of my favorites, but my taste is very eclectic.

Zeus B Held - Zeus Amusement 1978 (Germany, Krautrock, Electronic)

Bernd Held (born 24/8/1950, in Freiburg) better known as "Zeus" B. Held, was part of the Cologne rock scene from a young age, notably with the seminal but undocumented Sound Edge. Later, he seemed to be the man that pushed Birth Control on to more complex progressive rock, with his ever-broadening instrumentation of winds, keyboards and synthesizers, especially during their concept album phase of PLASTIC PEOPLE and BACKDOOR POSSIBILITIES. But, maybe he was just learning and exploring, as what he went on to afterwards with rather unprecedented!

You see, Zeus' solo debut ZEUS' AMUSEMENT was a bizarrely wide-ranging potpourri of styles, from a corny vocoder version of "The Fool On The Hill" via Kraftwerk style electro-pop, progressive rock, spacey synth music, etc., on to some really good Kraut jazzy fusion. As such it amounted to a good CV demo of all the types of music he was capable of.

Released as a single "The Fool On The Hill" seemed to dictate his new style would be electro-pop, and thus his next album EUROPIUM focused on the Kraftwerk-like and synthesized styles more. As a less patchy release, however, it never contained any of the excellent fusion of the debut. The third album we haven't heard.

Zeus B. Held also went on to be a producer and engineer. He produced Die Krupps 1984 album ENTERING THE ARENA, amongst others.

The Fool On The Hill / Off The Cuff / Goodbye Europe / Italian Items / Claude / Madmen's Rag / Why Can't I Be A Singer / LA's OK / Space Cake / Sagenhaft
LP Brain 60.120 (1978)
Zeus B. Held (keyboards, vocals, vocoder, flute, alto saxophone, percussion),
+ Manfred von Bohr (drums, percussion), Horst Stachelhaus (bass), George Fisher (vocals), Christoph Noppeney (viola), Claudia Simeaux-Levy (vocals)

Globe Unity - Compositions 1980 (Germany/Multinational, Free Jazz)

The huge international modern jazz orchestra project led by pianist Alexander von Schlippenbach, formed in 1965. As big band jazz with a pretty wild edge, these are not to our taste at all. But, they are important in the jazz world. Some, however, are of slight interest to us due to featuring some key figures in Krautrock and jazz-fusion, like: Mani Neumeier (Guru Guru), Jaki Liebezeit (Can), Gerd Dudek, etc.

- Enrico Rava - trumpet

Island - Pictures 1977 (Switzerland, Krautock, Symphonic Prog)

In essence, Island could be seen as some sort of Swiss supergroup, though really they were the evolution from a number of bands, originating from Deaf, whilst also interconnected with Toad (but not ex-Brainticket as often reputed) and Circus, as well as other lesser-knowns. So many origins and influences resulted in Island creating a refined and complex style. Apparently sessions exist with various line-ups circa 1974-1977, of which one such work is included on the recent CD reissue of their LP.

On their sole album PICTURES, which was aptly as gloomy and as strange as H.R. Giger's visionary cover art, Island's music oozed invention. Often quoted as the Swiss Van der Graaf Generator, Island had a similar feel, with a very odd instrumentation for a rock band and a vocalist who sounds like a hybrid of Peter Hammill (with a German accent) with a few Peter Gabriel touches. They were by no means copyists however, like Berlin's acclaimed Van der Graaf Generator: Metropolis, Island had all sorts of unique elements at play, full of gloom and sinister lyrics. PICTURES has justly been acclaimed as one of the masterpieces of Swiss rock.

Since Island's demise Peter Scherer moved into the fusion field, and later recorded an album together with American jazz experimentalist Arto Lindsay. Actually PRETTY UGLY (LP/CD Made To Measure MTM 23) from 1990 turned out to be a surprising blend of high-tech electro styles, and not all what one would expect!

Flame Dream - Calatea 1978 (Switzerland, Krautrock, Symphonic Prog)

A reasonably successful and long running Swiss progressive, with a history dating back to the mid-1970's. Featuring Urs Waldispühl on guitar, and with Peter Wolf largely concentrating on multi-winds parts.
Of prime interest are their obscure early LP's. The debut CALATEA has nods to Van der Graaf Generator, Island and Circus, all in a more symphonic largely instrumental prog in the typical Teutonic (i.e. Eloy, Ramses, etc.) style. The second album ELEMENTS develops this style with a nod in the direction of Genesis and Italian progressives, it is even more instrumental and explorative. Both are excellent examples of sophisticated progressive rock.
We first encountered them with their third and fourth albums, which saw a move to more song oriented progressive akin to fellow Swiss proggers Irrwisch. In featuring strong arrangements and elaborately crafted songs (in English), Flame Dream of the 1980's could be considered as the Swiss Genesis, with little originality of their own. All these albums feature excellent musicianship, high quality production, a Peter Gabriel styled lead vocalist, and are quite enjoyable. Certainly they were easily on par with any contemporary British counterparts.
Note: For some unknown reason, the album TRAVAGANZA was released in the UK as being by Travaganza, not Flame Dream!

The Knut Kiesewetter Train - STOP! WATCH! AND LISTEN! 1970 (Germany, Krautrock, Beat, Historical)

From what I can find out, Knut is not a Scandinavian singer who went to Stuttgart, Germany, to get in on the hip new psychedelic jazz scene, as reported in some ill-informed jazz articles. Knut (born 13/9/1941, in Stettin) studied music in Hamburg and Lübeck, and debuted as early as 1965 with a German language cover version of the Beatles "Yesterday". He turns out to be both a multi-instrumentalist, and an all-round pop, jazz, m-o-r, etc., singer, songwriter. He has tried out almost every type of popular music genre there is. Most of his albums are sung in the German language
His one-off venture into psychedelic rock 'n' soul, as The Knut Kiesewetter Train, saw him handling English lyrics with considerable aplomb. His backing band comprised of some of the finest talent of the era - for an album that was real groovy man! With snazzy production, all spiced up with the Krauty psychedelic jazz sound, it was comparable in many ways to Soul Caravan.

Whisper Not / Sometimes In Winter / Roll On The Left Side / Work Song / Morning And Evening Blues / Fool On The Hill / I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free / Body And Soul
